Registered Nurse III-MC/CHC – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
ABOUT THE POSITION
Riverside University Health System (RUHS)-Medical Center is currently seeking a full-time experienced Registered Nurses, for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Our 32-bed, Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides the backdrop to the high-touch, high-tech, high-quality care our nurses pride themselves on delivering to sick babies from 23 weeks gestational age and up. We have a dedicated neonatologist or neonatal nurse practitioner in-house 24/7. With only a door to separate us from the Labor and Delivery unit and operating rooms, our Advanced Response and Resuscitation Team is able to intervene quickly during complicated births. We value our active, collegial, and timely collaboration between physicians and front-line health care providers. As an academic medical center, our NICU team contributes to research and learning through participation in multi-center collaboratives, frequent drills with high-fidelity simulation equipment on the unit, and staff-led councils. Ours is a culture that encourages questions, applauds teamwork, and believes the family is the center of the plan for all the care we provide.
The selected candidate(s) will be responsible for the following:
- Provide care for infants immediately after birth.
- Oversee the care of infant patients in the NICU.
- Troubleshoot and maintain NICU equipment.
- Consult with parents/guardians on aftercare and long-term health management for infants.
- Cares for and manage patients on respiratory support (Nasal cannula, HFNC, CPAPs, Ventilators, and HFOV)
- Educate new parents on basic infant care including breastfeeding, hygiene and safety.
- Perform tests ordered by the obstetrician or nurse practitioner and evaluate the results.
Required licenses and certifications:
- Candidates must possess a valid Registered Nurse license issued by the state of California.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Provider Certification (NRP)
The most competitive candidates will possess th e following:
- STABLE certification
- National Certification-RNC-NIC
- At least one (1) years working as a registered nurse in a Level III NICU.
Work Schedule: Night Shift- 6/12; 7:00pm-7:30am

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Assess, plan, organize and provide nursing care to assigned patients in accordance with physician instructions; make preliminary observations of patients and prepare patients for, medical treatment.
• Assist physicians in administering treatments and in performing medical examinations, diagnostic tests and surgical operations.
• Administer prescribed treatment and medications, including dispensing, as ordered to patients; chart treatment of patients; record and report significant changes in condition and general progress of patients.
• Counsel and advise patients, families and significant others regarding special medical problems and/or proper healthcare methods; prepare and maintain concise and complete records and reports.
• Instruct patients in carrying out physician’s orders; transcribe physician’s orders to working records.
• Provide orientation and training to new staff, residents, medical students, Regional Occupational Program (ROP) participants and nursing students.
• Participate in quality assurance reviews; act as a team leader or relief charge nurse.
• Assign and monitor the work of subordinate nursing personnel; participate in committee activities.
• Triage patients by reviewing admission charts and merging patients into the appropriate patient assignment or clinic flow when appropriate.
• Testify in court as to client’s mental and physical condition.
• Coordinate and monitor patients through the hospitalization process utilizing physicians, primary care nurses and third-party payors to maintain quality care and fiscal responsibility.
• Review the post hospital care plan with the patient,/family establishing a contact regarding timeframes and responsibilities; follow care plan through patient discharge.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Successful completion of the education required to obtain a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California. (A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing or a health-related field may be required for some positions.)
Experience: Equivalent to three years of full time experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care facility or community health agency with references and evaluations to show appropriate skill level. (A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing or a national certification in a nursing specialty may be substituted for one year of the required experience. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing may be substituted for two years of the required experience.)
License:Must possess and maintain a current valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California or valid out of state license with authorization to work in California.
Knowledge of: Current principles, techniques and procedures used in professional nursing; medical terminology and patient care routine appropriate to clinical setting; medical instruments and equipment; the uses and effects of medicines and narcotics; community resources available to provide patient care and follow-up; federal, state and local laws and regulations governing professional aspects of nursing; identification of potential discharge needs; payor source documentation requirements and governmental regulations affecting reimbursement.
Ability to: Perform the full range of nursing duties and responsibilities in a patient care setting; plan and organize nursing plans for patients; prepare and maintain concise and complete records and reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients and co-workers; secure the cooperation of employees to work effectively together; assist in the instruction of entry-level nurses and ancillary personnel; keep abreast of developments in area of nursing specialization; evaluate the medical records of hospital admissions; provide recommendations regarding continued stay necessity; identify discharge needs.

MISCELLANEOUS RETIREMENT: County of Riverside has three retirement Tiers through the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS).
- Tier I (Classic Member – Formula 3% @ 60): Applicable to current and former County of Riverside local miscellaneous employees hired prior to 08/24/2012 and did not withdraw CalPERS contributions. The employee contribution is eight (8%) percent.
- Tier II (Classic Member – Formula 2% @ 60): Applicable to local miscellaneous employees 1) hired after 08/23/2012 through 12/31/2012; 2) Previously employed with another CalPERS contracting public agency or a reciprocal retirement system, with a break in service of less than six months between the separation date with the previous employer and the appointment date with the County of Riverside. The employee contribution is seven (7%) percent.
- Tier III (PEPRA New Member – Formula 2% @ 62): Applicable to CalPERS local miscellaneous new members hired on or after the implementation of the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) which took effect January 1, 2013. Effective July 1, 2023 employee contributions are 7.25% and will increase to 7.75% effective July 1, 2024.
A new member is defined as any of the following:
CalPERS refers to all members that do not fit within the definition of a new member as “classic members”.
Contribution rates are subject to change based on the County of Riverside annual actuarial valuation.

CalPERS is governed by the Public Employees’ Retirement Law. The Retirement Law is complex and subject to change. DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Voluntary employee contribution with a choice between two 457 deferred compensation plan options.
VACATION ACCRUAL (Bi-Weekly Accrual):
0< 3 year = 80 Hours (10 Days)
4< 9 years = 120 Hours (15 Days)
10 or more years = 160 Hours (20 Days)
Maximum Vacation leave accumulation is 480 hours.
SICK LEAVE: Four (4) hours Sick Leave accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual.
HOLIDAYS: Normally 12 paid holidays per year.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: Allowed 5 days (3 days are County paid; 2 additional days can be taken from accrued Sick Leave balance).
BASIC LIFE INSURANCE: Equal to one times annual base salary not to exceed $50,000 of term life coverage. Premiums are paid by the County. Additional Supplemental Life plan is available for employee purchase.
DISABILITY: Short-term Disability benefit pays up to a maximum of $461.54 weekly, payable up to a maximum of 52 weeks.
POST RETIREMENT MEDICAL CONTRIBUTION: A monthly contribution is made by the County towards retiree health insurance offered through the County as governed by the applicable SEIU Memorandum of Understanding.
